verbnoun

EnglishEdit

EtymologyEdit

A calque of the Welsh berfenw: berfverb + enwnoun.

NounEdit

verbnoun (plural verbnouns)

  1. (Welsh grammar) A verb form which acts as a defective noun, having functions similar to the English infinitive and gerund, and the Latin supine.

Usage notesEdit

  • In dictionaries (such as Geiriadur Prifysgol Cymru) that lemmatise the first-person singular present active indicative forms of verbs, the verbnoun is given as the second principal part.
