Probably from Middle Low German verlōf (“furlough, permission”) (possibly via or influenced by German Verlaub), from the verb verlōven (“to allow”), from Old Saxon far- + levian (“to give over, leave”).
Cognate with English furlough, Danish forlov, German Verlaub (“permission”).
