Inherited from Proto-Slavic *větvь. Cognates include Bulgarian ветва (vetva), Russian ветвь (vetvʹ), Old Polish wiećw. Non-Slavic cognates include Latin vītis (“vine”), German Weide (“willow”), Old Prussian witwan (willow), Persian بید (bid, “willow”).
