From Dutch vloot, from Middle Dutch vlote, an ablauted noun derived from vlieten. Cognate to Old Saxon flota, Middle Low German vlote, Old High German flozza, German Flosse, West Frisian float, Old English flota, Old Norse floti, all derived from Proto-Germanic *flutan- (floating object).
