From Proto-Germanic *waknaną (to awaken). Cognate with Old Norse vakna ( > Danish vågne), German wachen, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐍅𐌰𐌺𐌽𐌰𐌽 (gawaknan). Compare wacan, wacian.
