From Proto-Germanic *werpaną, from Proto-Indo-European *werb-. Cognate with Old Frisian werpa, Old Saxon werpan, Old Dutch werpan (Dutch werpen), Old High German werfan (German werfen), Old Norse verpa (Danish verpe), Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐍀𐌰𐌽 (wairpan). The Indo-European root also led to Latin verbera, Russian верба (verba).
