ykkösolut
Finnish edit
Etymology edit
ykkös- (“number one”) + olut (“beer”). Taxation of beer in Finland is based on alcoholic content. Until 1994, the taxation was based on excise tax brackets. The lowest bracket was marked with Roman numeral "I" on the label. The Roman numerals remained on the labels many years after the tax brackets ceased to exist legally.
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
ykkösolut
- small beer (beer with low alcoholic content; in Finland, a beer with less than 2,8 % alcohol)
Usage notes edit
- In Finland, a beer with less than 0.5 % alcohol is called alkoholiton olut (“non-alcoholic beer”).
