Etymology edit

From Old Norse ósk, from Proto-Germanic *wunskō, from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁- (to wish, love). The 'n' was re-added under the influence of Middle Low German (compare German Low German wönschen (wish), Plautdietsch Wensch (wish)).
