From Proto-Turkic *jog-urt (“curdled, coagulated milk”),[1] from *jogur- (“to knead, to fluff up, to condense”) + *-ut.[2][3] By surface analysis, yoğur- (“to knead”) + -t. Cognate with Old Turkic 𐰖𐰆𐰍𐰆𐰺𐱃 (yogurt).

From Ottoman Turkish یوغورت, from Proto-Turkic *jog-urt (“curdled, coagulated milk”),[1] from *jogur- (“to knead, to fluff up, to condense”) + *-ut,[2][3] equivalent to yoğur- (“to knead”) + -t. Cognate with Old Uyghur ywγrwt (yoɣrut, “yoghurt”).
