Etymology edit
From ziemny (“pertaining to soil, earth”) + -ak, from Proto-Slavic *zemьnъ. Displaced earlier jabłko ziemne, itself a calque of German Erdapfel (literally “earth-apple”).[1] Compare Slovak zemiak, French pomme de terre (literally “apple of the earth”).
