Yiddish edit

Etymology edit

From Middle High German līhen, from Old High German līhan, from Proto-West Germanic *līhwan, from Proto-Germanic *līhwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *léykʷt.

Verb edit

לײַען (layen) (past participle געליִען (gelien))

  1. lend
  2. borrow

Usage notes edit

For both senses, the object being lent is in accusative and the person in the dative, with the sense borrow being often disambiguated by using the preposition בײַ (bay) before the person. The past participle געליגן (gelign) is also used.
