Inherited from Prakrit 𑀳𑀯𑁆𑀯𑀁 (havvaṃ) or 𑀅𑀯𑁆𑀯𑀁 (avvaṃ), from Sanskrit (a, this) + एवम् एव (evam eva, just now). Compare जब (jab), तब (tab), and कब (kab). Cognate with Bengali এবে (ebe).
