Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀪𑀢𑁆𑀢 (bhatta), from Sanskrit भक्त (bhaktá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰaktás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰh₂g-tó-s, from the root *bʰeh₂g- (“to divide, distribute”). Doublet of भक्त (bhakt). Compare Gujarati ભાત (bhāt), Bengali ভাত (bhat), Assamese ভাত (bhat), Sylheti ꠜꠣꠔ (báto), Kannada ಭಾತ್ (bhāt), Sinhalese බත (bata), Dhivehi ބަތް (bat̊).
