Inherited from Early Assamese মঞি (moñi), মই (moi), Kamarupi Prakrit 𑖦𑖂 (mai, “by me”), 𑖦𑖺𑖊 (moe) Magadhi Prakrit 𑀫𑀇 (maï, “by me”), 𑀫𑀏 (mae), from Sanskrit মযা (máyā, “by me”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *máyaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *máyaH, the instrumental singular of *aȷ́ʰám (“I”), from Proto-Indo-European *éǵHom. Compare Odia ମୁଁ (mũ), Kamta মুই (mui), মইঁ (moĩ), Sylheti ꠝꠥꠁ (mui), Punjabi ਮੈਂ (maĩ), Nepali म (ma), Bengali মুই (mui), Rohingya mui, Marathi मी (mī), Hindustani मैं (ma͠i) / میں (ma͠i) all deriving from oblique forms of the first-person personal pronoun.
