From Proto-Tai *beːꟲ (to defeat; to be defeated). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩯ᩶, Khün ᨻᩯ᩶, Lao ແພ້ (phǣ), ᦶᦗᧉ (pae²), Shan ပေႉ (pḛ̂e).
