From Proto-Karen *thejᴬ (“water”) (Luangthongkum, 2019) or *thi⁴ (“idem”) (Burling, 1969), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m-t(w)əj-n ~ m-ti-s (“water, fluid, wet, to soak”). Cognate with S'gaw Karen ထံ (hṭee), Eastern Pwo ထီ့, Western Pwo ထံၫ, Western Kayah ꤓꤛꤢꤩ꤭ (htyē).
