From Proto-Mon-Khmer *briiʔ (forest). Cognate with Semelai bri, Koho bri (forest, bush), Khasi bri, Mang ʑiː⁶, Khmu [Cuang] briʔ, Hu pʁíʔ, Pear priː. Cognate with Thai ไพร (prai, forest, jungle).
