From Proto-Indo-European *ḱley- (to lean). Cognate with Ancient Greek κλῖμαξ (klîmax, ladder). Related to Gothic 𐌷𐌻𐌴𐌹𐌸𐍂𐌰 (hleiþra, booth, tent, literally that which leans). Compare also Latin clathri (trellis).
