From Old Galician-Portuguese artelho, from Vulgar Latin *articlus, a syncopated/contracted form of Latin articulus (digiti). Compare the borrowed doublets artigo and artículo. Compare Spanish artejo, Galician artello, Catalan artell, French orteil.
