Etymology edit

Probably from unattested Old Irish *gartiugud (passing time, shortening time), a derivative of garait (short) (cf. goirid). Later reanalyzed as a derivative of gàir (laugh). Cognate with Irish gáirdeachas. Possibly related to aighear (delight, joy, merriment).
