From Proto-West Germanic [Term?], from Proto-Germanic *gahailijaną; equivalent to ġe- +‎ hǣlan. Cognate with Old Saxon gihēlian, Old High German giheilen, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌹𐌻𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gahailjan).
