Syncopated form of older gweled, from Middle Welsh gwelet, from Proto-Celtic *weleti (compare Cornish gweles, Breton gwelet), from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (compare Latin voltus (facial expression), Old English wuldor (glory), Tocharian B yel- (to examine), Old English wlītan (to look, gaze)).
