Etymology edit
From Old Norse kjarf, kerfi (“bundle”). Compare with Middle High German krēbe (“basket”), and Sanskrit grapsa- "bundle".[1] Also perhaps akin to Old Saxon crybb (and ergo to Modern English crib).[2]
