From Old Norse hlaupa, from Proto-Germanic *hlaupaną, from Proto-Indo-European *klewb- (“to spring, stumble”). Cognate with English leap, German laufen (“to run; to walk”), Swedish löpa (“to run”), Danish løbe (“to run”).
