Noun edit

lexical set (plural lexical sets)

  1. (phonology) A group of words that share a particular phonological feature.

Usage notes edit

  • This term often designates the standard lexical sets for English introduced in 1982 by John C. Wells. They are based on the pronunciation of the vowels of their stressed syllables in reference accents: KIT vowel (/ɪ/), DRESS vowel (/e/ or /ɛ/), and so on.
