From a borrowing of Middle Low German māt, māte, from Old Saxon *gimato, of West Germanic origin, from Proto-Germanic *gamatjô, itself from *ga- (“together”) + *matjô, from *matiz (“food”).[1][2]
Cognate with Old High German gimazzo, English mate.
