From Proto-Indo-European *h₃nobʰis, from *h₃nebʰ- (navel). Cognate with Sanskrit नाभि (nā́bhi), Ancient Greek ὀμφαλός (omphalós), Latin umbilīcus, Old English nafola (whence English navel).
