Etymology edit

From Middle Dutch prochie, from Latin parochia, from Ancient Greek πᾰροικῐ́ᾱ (paroikíā). The a was usually syncopated in Middle Dutch, but it was restored and became increasingly common in early modern Dutch due to influence of the Latin term.
