From Old Norse rauf (gap, rift, hole), Proto-Germanic *raubō (rift), cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk rauv, ræv, Swedish röv. The noun is derived from the verb Old Norse rjúfa (to break, tear), from Proto-Germanic *reufaną (to tear).
