From Medieval Latin vernix, from Latin veronix, from Byzantine Greek βερενίκη, βερονίκη (bereníkē, beroníkē, “resin amber”), from Ancient Greek βερενίκιον, βερονίκιον (bereníkion, beroníkion, “soda”), from Βερενίκη (Bereníkē). Cognate with Piedmontese vernis/vërnis.
