From Middle Dutch verstaen, from Old Dutch farstān, from Proto-Germanic *fura + *stāną, compare Proto-West Germanic *frastandan (“to oppose; to understand”). Cognate with German verstehen; English forstand, Swedish förstå. Equivalent to ver- + staan.
