Derived from an iterative of obsolete пять (pjatʹ) (see -пять (-pjatʹ)), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *pęti.

edit
  • IPA(key): [pʲɪˈnatʲ]
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

edit

пина́ть (pinátʹimpf (perfective пнуть)

  1. to kick

Usage notes

edit

Пина́ть is comparatively rarely used and has negative connotations. In everyday speech, Russians do not differentiate between forms of striking or physical violence in the same way as English speakers. "Punch," "kick," "slap," "stab" etc. are all commonly expressed simply using the verb ударить (udaritʹ).
