From Proto-Hellenic *hréumə, likely inherited from Proto-Indo-European *sréwmn̥, from *srew- (to flow) +‎ *-mn̥; equivalent to ῥέω (rhéō, to flow) +‎ -μα (-ma). Compare the related Proto-Indo-European *srówmos, whence also Old English stream. See also ῥυθμός (rhuthmós).
