First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 일〯ᄒᆞ다〮 (Yale: ǐl-hòtá).

(il, work) +‎ 하다 (-hada, to do, light verb deriving active verbs).
