Luxembourgish edit

Etymology edit

From Middle High German spiegel, from Old High German spiagal, from Latin spēculum. Cognate with German Spiegel, Dutch spiegel. The expected Luxembourgish form would be *Spill (like Zill from Middle High German ziegel). The form Spigel is probably based on a variant Middle High German *spigel, which is also implied by several Low and Central Franconian dialect forms. To this compare the Dutch doublets richel, regel and tichel, tegel, respectively from Latin rēgula and tēgula.
