Etymology edit

Borrowed from Vulgar Latin *potestāre, from Latin potestās (power, ability), whence Albanian pushtet (power).[1] Cognate with Medieval Latin potestare (to control), Old French poëster (to exercise power, to govern, to dominate; to put in power), Italian podestare.

The dialectal forms poshtroj, pështroj are influenced by shtroj.[1]

Verb edit
