Attested as Enneco, Ennego and other variants in medieval documents.^[1] Probably from the Basque Ennece, a proper name.^[1] A relationship with the Latin proper name Ignatius is very unlikely.^[1] Basque cognates are Eneko and Eneka.

The Spanish family name Íñiguez is derived from Íñigo and the suffix -ez.
