Ancient Greek edit

Etymology edit

The formation resembles στέλεχος (stélekhos), τάριχος (tárikhos) and τέμαχος (témakhos). Connected with σέλας (sélas, light, glow, beam) already by Galen, because of the phosphorescent light of certain cartilaginous fishes; yet the suffix "-αχ-" may point to a Pre-Greek origin. The old connection with Proto-Germanic *selhaz (seal) is untenable.
