Etymology edit

From χαμαί (khamaí, to the earth, on the earth), a frozen case-form of χθών (khthṓn, earth), itself from Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm. Compare πάλαι (pálai), παραί (paraí). The ending could be formed after the antonym ὑψηλός (hupsēlós).[1]
