First attested in c. 1075‒1100. From Old East Slavic-Varangian given name *Gъdlěbъ, borrowed from Old Norse Guðleifr (literally God's heir) from guð (God) + leifr (inheritor). Compare Old Swedish Guðlēfr, Old Saxon Godolēf, Godlēf, Old English Gūðlāf, German Gottlieb. Cognate with Old East Slavic Гълѣбъ (Gŭlěbŭ), Old Ruthenian Глѣбъ (Hlěb), Russian Глеб (Gleb).
