First attested in c. 1140‒1160. It seems that the name belongs to a person (probably a merchant) of eastern origin. Arabic قِيَاس (qiyās, comparison; sample, measure, norm) is widely used as a personal name by many peoples of the Eastern world, in particular the Turkic.[1] Compare Turkish Kıyas, Turkmen Kyýas, Kyrgyz Кыяс (Kıyas), Kumyk Къыяс (Qıyas).
