Bashkir edit

Etymology edit

From *bašla- (to begin sth.), from Proto-Turkic *baĺč (head; beginning).

Note that postulation of Proto-Turkic *baĺč-la- (to begin) is problematic, as no derivatives are attested in Orkhon Turkic, Yakut, Tuva or Tofalar. The Chuvash verb may have formed in contact and by analogy with the Kypchak languages.

Cognate with Old Uyghur [script needed] (bašla-, to begin);[1]Uzbek boshlamoq, Uyghur باشلىماق (bashlimaq), Kumyk башламакъ (başlamaq), Azerbaijani başlamaq, Turkish başlamak, Chuvash пуҫла (puśla, to begin), etc. See баштау (baştaw) for more cognates.
