Inherited from Proto-Slavic *bèbrъkъ. By surface analysis, бебръ (bebrŭ) + -ке (-ke) or + -ъке (-ŭke). First attested in c. 1200‒1220. Cognate with Upper Sorbian běbrk (“beaverkin”).
