Inherited from Proto-Slavic *moťi, from Proto-Indo-European *megʰ-. Cognate with Belarusian магчы́ (mahčý), Bulgarian мо́га (móga), Serbo-Croatian мо̏ћи, Czech moci, English may, Dutch mogen, Icelandic mega.
