Etymology

edit

Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary favours a grammatical origin from Proto-Slavic *mьrkati (to smudge, to daub) (implied also by Vasmer in relation to probable cognate Russian мереча (mereča, sludge)). Other hypotheses view it as a figurative sense of onomatopoeic мъ́ркам (mǎ́rkam, to purr).
