Etymology

Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary favours a grammatical origin from Proto-Slavic *mьrkati (“to smudge, to daub”) (implied also by Vasmer in relation to probable cognate Russian мереча (mereča, “sludge”)). Other hypotheses view it as a figurative sense of onomatopoeic мъ́ркам (mǎ́rkam, “to purr”).
