Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *yē- (“to eat”), compare Azerbaijani yemək, Kazakh жеу (jeu), Tuvan чиир (çiir).

Verb

сиэ • (sie)

1. (transitive or intransitive) to eat

   сүөһү оту сиир ― süöhü otu siir ― cattle feed on grass

   Synonym: аһаа (ahaa, “to eat”)

2. (colloquial) to exterminate, to destroy

   чыычаах буортулаах үөннэри сиир ― cııcaaq buortulaaq üönneri siir ― a bird destroys (or eats up) harmful worms

3. (figurative, colloquial) to eat up (consume greatly and/or excessively)
4. to burn (about certain things — fire, sunlight, acid, etc.)
