Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *tur- (“to stand”).

Verb

тороу • (torow) (intransitive)

1. to stand
   1. to raise to one's feet
   2. to support oneself on the feet in an erect position
   3. to remain motionless

      Кәртәгә тотоноп, ҡарт оҙаҡ ҡына ауыл урамына ҡарап торҙо.

      Kərtəgə totonop, qart oźaq qına awıl uramına qarap torźo.

      The old man stood for a long time, holding on a fence and looking at the village street.

   4. to get up, rise from one's bed

      Был көндө ир-аттар иртә таңдан тороп мәсеткә йүнәлә.

      Bıl köndö ir-attar irtə tañdan torop məsetkə yünələ.

      On this day, men get up early at dawn and head for the mosque.

2. to be in a specific state or condition
   1. to stay in a specific state or condition

   Был аҙнала төбәктә көндәр һалҡын торасаҡ.

   Bıl aźnala töbəktə köndər halqın torasaq.

   This week, the weather will stay cool in the region.

   Тышта ел өрә, ҡарҙы һеперә, // Мин өйҙә торам һалҡынға күрә. (Mustai Karim)

   Tışta yel örə, qarźı heperə, // Min öyźə toram halqınğa kürə.

   Outside, the wind is blowing (and) sweeping the snow, I am staying at home because of the cool weather.

3. to be located, have a specific location

   Ғалимдар аңлатыуынса, баш бармаҡ айырым торһа, эш йә һуғыш ҡоралын ҡыҫып тотоу уңайлыраҡ.

   Ğalimdar añlatıwınsa, baş barmaq ayırım torha, eş yə huğış qoralın qıśıp totow uñaylıraq.

   As scientists explain, if the thumb is located separately, it is more convenient to tightly hold a war weapon or an instrument of labor.

4. to live

   Synonym: йәшәү (yəşəw)

   1. to live somewhere, have a residence [+locative]

   Synonym: ятыу (yatıw)

5. to cost, have a specific price [+indefinite accusative]
6. to depend on somebody/something [+ablative]

   Тормошта бөтә нәмә лә үҙеңдән тора икән.

   Tormoşta bötə nəmə lə üźeñdən tora ikən.

   As it emerges, everything in life depends on yourself.

7. to consist of [+ablative]

   Synonym: ғибәрәт (ğibərət)
