From *toqay (forest; brushwood) - apparently a regional Central Asian term.

Cognate with Kazakh тоғай (toğai, forest; bushes), Kyrgyz токой (tokoy, forest; bushes on flooded riverbanks), Uyghur توقاي (toqay, wildwood, forest), Uzbek toqoj (brushwood, bulrush), Turkmen tokaý (forest), Azerbaijani toğay (forest in river valleys) etc.
