Etymology edit
From Greek αντζούγα (antzoúga), αντζούγια (antzoúgia), orthographied reflecting the Western Armenian pronunciation. See the Greek entry for more. Doublet of անչոուս (ančʿous), which arrived through Russian.
First found in the Armenian–Latin dictionary of Stefanus Roszka, quoting a geographical work known only to him. Copied from that dictionary into the standard dictionaries and hence accepted as the standard designation of “anchovy” in the literary language. See also թուխու (tʿuxu), լոսդի (losdi), թառափ (tʿaṙapʿ) for other fish names with a similar fate.
