Old Armenian edit

Etymology edit

From the aorist stem եղ- (eł-) of լինիմ (linim) +‎ -ան- (-an-). The origin of եղ- (eł-) is uncertain. It may be inherited from Proto-Indo-European *kʷel- (to turn) and cognate with Ancient Greek πέλω (pélō, to be in motion, to go; to be; to become), but the loss of *kʷ- is problematic. See also յեղում (yełum, to change, to transmute).
